What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s.The technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. These intervals are known as "pomodoros", the plural in English of the Italian word pomodoro meaning "tomato".The method is based on the idea that frequent breaks can improve mental agility.(The timer length can vary as per a individuals choice.)

Getting started

There are five basic steps to implementing the technique:

  • Decide on the task to be done
  • Set the pomodoro timer to n minutes
  • Work on the task until the timer rings; record with an x
  • Take a short break (3–5 minutes)
  • After four pomodoros, take a longer break (15–30 minutes)
